Exchanging Words

There is a saying in Dutch called "woorden wisselen". The literaly translation is "exchanging words". It is mostly used to describe a serious discussion between two people that do business, or have "an apple to peel". I, however, had a very pleasent evening yesterday, as I was exchanging words with Lars (on the left). It is very nice to have a friend with who you can communicate on the same level of thinking. Exchanging words, explaining theories to each other, and sharing personal feelings can then occur on an high and accurate level. In this way you can also inspire one another.

By the way, the Dutch clouds are really nice this time of the year, very majestic and overwhelmingly gigantic.

On another note, I recently went to my 7th Opeth show, this time the venue was "De Melkweg", and once again the performance was brilliant, powerfull, grinding, heavy, melodic, emotional and there was enough sloppy humour to go around. I play the Ghost Reveries now almost continously....addictive as it is.

...this may be a somewhat emotional respons, but cmmon! Look at this state! You can follow one terrorist in a country with an unmanned camera, that cost...more than one iPod. You can then shoot this terrorists compound from the sky with a jetplain that cost...more then your average car. Without daring to recognise the danger of this city?! Experts have been warning about this for decades! Maybe Jared Diamond does have a point when he points to the Netherlands as having the biggest chance for survival of global warming.

Common Sense Has Died

To Whom It May Concern,

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Mr. Common Sense.

Mr. Sense had been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm and that life isn't always fair.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to rapidly deteriorate when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place: reports of a six-year boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, these only worsened his condition.

Mr. Sense declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student; but, could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Finally, Common Sense lost his will to live as the Ten Commandants became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense finally gave up the ghost after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, she spilled a bit in her lap and was awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son Reason. He is survived by two stepbrothers; My Rights and Ima Whiner. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on; if not, join the majority and do nothing.

Dour Festival 2005

With many friends I underwent the Dour experience once more. With many types of food, bad conditions, hot weather, smelly toilets and 200+ acts spread over four 18-hour days of festival. Herman wrote a report of day one on his blog and there will probably be even more as this week progresses.

The bands that have left lasting impressions during the festival were Isis, Cult of Luna, Anthony B., Israel Vibration, Sayag Jazz Machine, Fantomas and Resistence.

North Sea Jazz

For the last time The Hague hosted the North Sea Jazz festival. It was the 30th edition of this get-together and once again people from all ages, colours and genders ventured into the concrete maze that is called the National Congress Centre.
I was fortunate enough to work for ISS during the entire weekend as cleaning service, which ment I could walk around freely as long as my terrain, which I shared with my girlfriend, was clean. Our terrain was near the "Spiegeltent" and the "Carel Willink"-hall. Most of the work was cleaning food off the tables and replacing full trashcans with empty ones.

Unfortunatly I could see much of the music, but the atmosphere was excellent. Jazz seems to relax everybody, as there were no real incidents in our terrain. Some of the acts I did see were "Steps Ahead", which sounded really progressive and modern with a very good live sound.
I hope that the move to Rotterdam, where the Festival is held next year, will be a good one. It was alot of fun working on the festival with my girlfriend and other friends.

Strange discussions

Some discussions I just don't get. How can people discuss whether the God of Abraham is the same as the God of Moses. Whether Allah is God or not? If there is one term in human history that has been defined and redefined it God, but at the end of the story God is just all about the stuff we cannot understand. Even after modern science is able to rationalise the world, there remains the emotion within people to have something like a God. So what does it matter if there are differences??

At first I had the impression that most people think as I do about this, but once you get to talk to people the fundamentalism and absolutism they have for "their" God is really a strange phenomenon.

Another strange discussion is the one on evolution and creation. Central in this discussion is the question: "who are we and where do we come from?" Are we created by a God or did we evolve out of apes? Why not scrap this contradiction and ask the following question:

"How is evolution created?" or "How did creation evolve?". Answer on these question are found either in Quantum-physics or Mystic religion. In the end All is One, yet in the end critical humans don't like oneness, because it doesn't explain, it doesn't operate and you cannot build a machine with it.

Yet, the strangest discussion of all is about the brains. Our main tool and our consciousness. We are and we know we are. Do animals know they are? If not, are they? Neuro-science is constantly redefining it's philosophical parameters in order to explain new foundings, and new rarities, while Indian medicine has just accepted the paranormal several centuries ago. So modernity has gotton itself cornered into using more and more difficult words, while denying spirituality.

Oh well, things could be worse.

Remember Nasa World Wind? Forget it, once again the Google-tribe has torn a marvelous idea into pieces, only to ressurect a new and improved competitor. Google Earth let's you fly around the earth in a much more pleasent way that the NASA. I'm using it to build maps for my historical research, which is a lot of fun.
So go get it...

Mascq Debate

Last wednesday and thursday I participated at a Student Debate Tournament. The meaning of this assembly is all about showing each other your skills in debating, in other words: win arguments.
It was a learning experience as it also was a failure. Prior to the tournament I was pretty secure of my own debating skills. Unfortunatly I was wrong. My teammate, Arne Klarenberg is a skillful negotiator and we had no problem coming up with arguments. In the first debate we had to defend the statement that 'windmills are out'. We managed to ensure the audience it was clean, cheap, dynamic and the energy source of the future. We won this debate. In the next debate we managed to come up with 8 arguments for the destruction of The Hague. But our opponent convinced the jury with clever populism.

Then the finals were held in the Acadamy Building in Leiden, where we had to argue against the abolation of student society membership in the first year of the study. Again, our arguments lost to presentation and structure.

So....I have learned I am not a debater...oh well

So this last summer something very remarkable happened to me and the (my) universe. My girlfriend Nike, her cool bike and me went for a one-week break through Belgium. It resulted in a lovely week with some nice rides through Belgium, visits to Ieper, Gent, Villers-la-Ville ruins and Maastricht. We camped first at the french-speaking part of the Belgian border in between mostly roudy teens having a part of their summer holidays there...on sand. Then we camped near Brussels, but so far away from Brussels. There we could see the castles of the European Union. These huge villa's with forests as garden we're european diplomatic offices, thats for sure. It's like being in the middle ages.

Anyway, then we camped at a location at a river, surrounded by forest. For me, nature was and still is sort of new. I grew up in Tel Aviv, then in The Hague and most of my holidays we're flights in between. I have gone on one-week break before, sure....but never with spacecake.
I dont remember what we we're doing that day excepts commiting a wasp genocide with half a Fanta bottle. That evening we took some chocolate spacecake we had brought allong from Holland. We ate it...we sat by the river...we went to the swings...we got to the tent...we pass out...

...and then the fun part. I cannot stop thinking. I am laying close to Nike and my thoughts accelerate, usually not the thing you expect from cannabis, but this was not your average trip. Every thought that I got, i could 'counter-think' with another, and so thoughts and new linkages developed. At first the medium was a rapid one, then it only got faster. I remember thinking about thinking about thinking about thinking about thinking about thinking...or at least so it felt.
At a few moments these thoughts got deeper. Deeper inside myself. I could see my own history. At first the wheels we're rolling toofast to get a clear view of an event, but it got more focussed.
While I was lying there Nike lay on my left arm, as I was holding her elbow and at a certain point in time her elbow became a remote control for my strange and active brain-trip. I started slowing down the images, stand still and deep in some heavy moments in your life and just see them. No judgement, no verdict, just emotion...and no talking. :)

...and now for the strange part. When I'd try putting the braintapes at pause by centering the turnaround ring on the remote with my finger - and remember all of this was happening on her elbow and with my index finger touching her - she gave a fysical shock. This happened several times in ths near time-less experience, so I could go on for hours trying to grasp the nature of time, the universe, human emotions and creativeness through marihuana. But would it make any sense to attach words to this?

I recently visited Israel, where I was born and raised the first eight years of my life.
Sitting on a grassfield in Caesaria, eating pancakes with chocolate, a very young human being approached us, and esspecially me.

The approximatly 4-year old stared with a blank face at my suprised face and made no sound.
Then an older man yelled at him: "Jonathan Bo-Hena", which means 'come here'.

Several minutes later the same thing happened, and in the car on the drive back to Tel Aviv there was an hebrew song on the radio about some Jonathan that was gone for a long time, and needed to come back to his homeland.

While eating falafel on a bench on the Yarkon, I was telling my bio-father about my little brother, David, and i didn't have to mention his name. Some other person in the park shouted 'David' just at the time I was about to say it.

These series of coincidences I noticed. And I see no point in further explaining them. I simply visited Israel and this chaos of a world seemed tuned. What more do you need?
